Competition Category A:

Future Library in A Historical Urban Area

With the wide application of the Internet, the function of traditional libraries has become weakened gradually. In a digital and information-based world, what could be the role of a future library? And what will be its positioning and function in urban space?

At the same time, the renewal of historical urban area is a topic widely discussed around the world. These urban areas have been built for a long time and can no longer meet the growing needs of residents. In addition to different degrees of physical aging, more and more problems have emerged in its functionality, structure and relationship with the city. Therefore, we look forward to using the library as a catalyst to provide a new vision for urban renewal.

In view of this, we encourage students to put a future library in an ancient city under a more comprehensive context, take the library and its environment as an “ecosystem” integrated with urban landscape, society, culture, public life, sustainability and other elements, and propose a creative design scheme accordingly.

I. Design Requirements

1. Participants are required to design a “Future Library” in a design site adjacent to water (such as a river, sea, a lake or an artificial lake) in the local historical city.

2. The participants shall complete the topographic map and designated assignment on their own under a selected real-life site and its current conditions. Participants shall show how their design will intervene and enhance the social, cultural and other elements related to the selected site and its surroundings, therefore turning it into an attractive urban public space.

3. Participants shall elaborate on the functions of the library, and the types of activities that could be organized in the library.

4. The suggested area of construction is about 2500 ㎡, which can be adjusted according to the demands and shall be explained accordingly.

II. Entry requirements

1. Submit drawings including: a floor plan, elevations, plans & sections, perspectives drawn to scale, and additional drawings to convey the overall concept; a 200-word project description outlining why your concept demonstrates the best solution in Chinese or English.

2. The above drawings and design instructions shall be arranged in 2 drawings with A1 size (841mm x 594mm) and vertical composition. There is no limit to the representation method of drawings.
