WUT: A WUT graduate’s team wins the 1st prize in the Kaira Looro International Architecture Competition

发布时间:2020-06-24

A team of three including Agnieszka Witaszek, an engineering graduate from the WUT Faculty of Architecture, won the top distinction for creating a unique concept of a foldable emergency shelter.

The team of junior architects developed a shelter design that could be used to the benefit of people living in Sub-Saharan Africa. The authors decided that special architectural solutions are required in order to embrace the unpredictable conditions of emergencies that may threaten the region and its inhabitants. Simple and functional design is thus the key.

The authors of the idea focused on designing a shelter structure that could provide an immediate relief after a disaster. The structure is compact and flexible and easy to assemble and disassemble, which all adds to its adaptability to rapidly changing conditions. The construction system is based on a single prefabricated element: a rectangular plywood board with indentations. With easy assembly by sliding one board into the other a waffle-like construction structure is created that might be quickly put together and dismantled even by an unqualified person without engineering background.

For a full description of the project go the Competition website. The winning team members beside Agnieszką Witaszek are Aleksandra Wróbel and Kamil Owczarek (Cracow University of Technology).
