Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University has launched an online course on learning the basics of physical education in Chinese. It is available on the Chinese educational platform XuetangX. The course «Physical Culture» has been presented on the national platform «Open Education» for more than five years. During its existence, it has been included in the list of the most popular SPbPU courses.
The authors were leading coaches and teachers of the Institute of Physical Education, Sports and Tourism of SPbPU. In March 2023, together with the team of the Open Education Center, the course materials were supplemented with topical topics on the basics of nutritionology, as well as the peculiarities of physical training for various diseases.
The high interest of Chinese students of Polytechnic University in physical education and sports has prompted the authors of the course, together with the Open Education Center, to translate the course «Physical Culture» into Chinese. The university is confident that by studying the course, Chinese students will be able to adapt more easily to the system of physical education in Russia, as well as improve the level of communication in classes and increase the involvement of Chinese students in the university’s sporting events.
It took about six months to prepare the course for Chinese students. During this time, specialists from the Open Education Center translated presentations, textual and graphic materials into Chinese, and made Chinese subtitles for video clips. Also, some of the educational content was re-recorded entirely in Chinese. The joint work of Russian and Chinese lecturers, as well as bilingual translation of presentations and longreads, make the course truly unique and accessible to Chinese listeners with different levels of language proficiency.
On February 9, 2024, on the eve of Chinese New Year, the online Physical Education course was published on the XuetangX platform. Now Chinese students can take Polytechnic’s courses online even during vacations.
