Rectors of German and Kazakh Universities meet in Astana, Kazakhstan

Rectors of 25 Kazakh and 11 German universities held detailed discussions on various ways of cooperation between higher education institutions of the two countries in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

The event, dubbed “Rectors Forum” was organized at L.N. Gumilev Eurasian National University in Astana and was held on the sidelines of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s three-day visit to Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan’s Vice-Minister for Science and Higher Education, Kuanysh Yergaliev, moderated the Forum’s proceedings and stressed strengthening the bilateral partnership between Kazakhstan and Germany in education and science. He said that Kazakhstan President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has directed the opening of branches of German universities in Kazakhstan.

Speaking at the Forum, the Rector of the Martin Luther Halle University-Wittenberg, Professor Claudia Becker, Vice-President of the Technical University of Darmstadt, Professor Heribert Warzecha, President of the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences, Professor Gundolf Baіer provided comprehensive information on key features and the latest changes in German higher education institutions.

In the afternoon, the participants of the Forum met Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Congress Center in Astana.

Addressing the participants, the President of Germany said that cooperation with Kazakhstan in the higher education and research sectors is important for his country. German and Kazakh universities signed several mutual cooperation agreements.

Kazakh Agrotechnical Research University (KATRU), also known as Seifullin University, has collaboration agreements with 9 German universities and organizations.
